European Commission raises target for reduction in emissions

1st June 2010

The European Commission last week published proposals to reduce current carbon emissions by 30% by 2020, representing a 10% increase in the current reduction target. The current pledge aims to reduce green house gas emissions by 20% compared to levels across Europe in 1990.

New Energy Focus reports, at present, the UK has a reduction target of 34% by 2020. The higher target is due to the UK producing a larger share of current emissions than other member states. If the overall target were to be raised, the UK's target would most likely also increase. This is good news for supporters of renewable energy, and anyone keen to see a boost in support for wind energy from the government.

In response to this news, Chris Huhne, the UK’s secretary of state for energy and climate change noted that securing an ambitious deal is a priority for the government. The coalition will reportedly support the 30%  EU emissions target.

It’s essential the Coalition government support the European Commission’s decision to raise the target for reducing carbon emissions. As debate continues regarding the government’s commitment to be Britain’s “greenest government ever,” its reaction to this news looks set to either support or disprove this statement.
